I’ve chartered boats in the Virgin Islands almost every year for the past 12 years and enjoyed a variety of experiences on each trip. I’ve cruised with small groups, large groups, with kids, without kids, you name it, I’ve signed up for it.

During the last 8 years, I’ve run a number of Sea Rays for this magazine and other marine publications. Each time I’m confronted by a juxtaposition of predictability and surprise. I basically know that I’ll be testing a solid performer packed with all the creature comforts. However, I’m always surprised that with each new model the builder incorporates design elements and features that leave you saying, “What a great idea, why hasn’t anyone thought of that before?” The new 330 Sundancer, which fills the gap between the 310 and the 340 vacated by the now discontinued 320, presented me with this same winning equation and gave cause to repeat this phrase on several occasions.

The Australian boatbuilder Riviera is a growing presence in the U.S. with a sales, parts and service network managed by its subsidiary Riviera Yachts of the Americas. The builder specializes in open and enclosed-bridge sportfishing convertibles, Euro-style express cruisers and a new series of sport yachts, 36- and 47-foot sedan models.

There is no doubt that under the new ownership of entrepreneurs Stephen Julius and Steve Heese, Chris-Craft is building fine-looking boats. A Corsair Launch in my marina spins heads every time the little dame sprints down the river on a sunset cruise. And the interiors of the Roamer series are as functional as they are elegant. In my opinion, this aesthetic assault on the senses has been a major component of the builder’s success during the last five or so years. Well, after having spent some time on the new 29 Catalina, I’ve learned about the other components to this success; great engineering, construction and performance. This makes it tough to avoid cliches such as the 29 is not just another pretty face. But there’s no way around it! The eye-catching lines of the 29 would motivate the dead to get up and give her a little pat on the stern. After you dig deeper, you’ll discover this sex appeal is only a small part of this center console’s winning formula.

Formula builds a range of high-end boats ranging from bowriders to go-fast to yachts. Formula, whose original bread and butter was its offshore racing boats, has parlayed that experience into a range of upscale family-oriented day and cruising boats. The 31 PC is part of the builder’s express cruiser lineup ranging from 27 to 40 feet.
Nordhavn 64

We don’t think it’s that far of a leap to say that essentially P.A.E, builders of the Nordhavn series, created the passagemaker production boat segment when they introduced the Nordhavn 46 in the 1980s. This single engine pilothouse model made headlines by crossing oceans, and circumnavigating. In fact, one recently went around Cape Horn. We challenge you to find another powerboat brand with as many bluewater miles under its keel than Nordhavn.

We’re gearing up to cover Marlow’s Explorer series in a complete editorial. The problem is, we’ll have to make sure we have enough pages to cover these worldclass cruisers in our editorial page budget. Founded by marine veteran, David Marlow, Marlow Marine builds the Explorer series from 53 to 86 feet, and the 37-foot Prowler. David has been cruising and selling boats almost his entire life. The day after I met with the Cabral’s on a muggy summer morning on the Connecticut River, they were to begin a much anticipated summer cruising schedule starting with a trip out to the eastern end of Long Island.
